Why in the world would Americans NOT exercise their right to vote, their opportunity to weigh in on the political process? Apparently some non-voters don’t think their vote will matter, or, believe that all politicians are the same. I’ve heard that before.
But what makes this poll different is that by a 2 to 1 margin, non-voters said they support President Obama over GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. This means that the non-voters who favor Obama are willing to cede their voice and political power to people whose main interest is THEIR profit margin and bottom lines, not the economic health and fiscal security of the entire country.
I don’t think non-voters realize what their non-actions on Election Day have done. Their non-votes have allowed politicians who cater to corporations and the wealthy to implement laws that are hurting everyday Americans.
So what will it take to get non-voters to the polls? Maybe the scary and disastrous economic plans Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, would implement if elected will do the trick. I don’t think non-voters want America to turn into a country where our President governs only for people with millions of dollars in the bank. Maybe Romney and Ryan’s anti-immigrant policies will get them to the polls. Or Romney and Ryan’s views that are not in favor of women’s reproductive rights.
So my message to non-voters who don’t want the wealthiest 1 percent run our country: VOTE! It’s a privilege that you must not give away to others.
And if you are a voter, help us get the word out to others! Here at the Center for Community Change and its c(4)sister organization, the Campaign for Community Change, we are assisting our grassroots partners working with marginalized communities in 14 states across the country to educate, register and mobilized voters on election day. With your help, we can help register 120,500 unregistered citizens. Donate now!”
